VICTORIA FALLS

Southern Africa's adventure capital

Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders, straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, offering a spectacular display of power and beauty. Known locally as "Mosi-oa-Tunya" or "The Smoke That Thunders," the sheer volume of water cascading over the edge creates a towering mist that can be seen from miles away. The roar of the falls and the rainbows that dance in the spray make this a mesmerising sight, leaving visitors in awe of nature’s raw force.

The surrounding area offers much more than just the falls themselves. Thrill-seekers on both sides of the falls - in either Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe or Livinstone in Zambia - can enjoy activities like white-water rafting, bungee jumping, or a scenic helicopter flight, while those seeking a quieter experience can take river cruises or explore the nearby national parks. With its combination of adventure and tranquillity, Victoria Falls remains a must-see destination for travellers seeking both excitement and the wonder of the natural world.

EXPLORE THE HIGHLIGHTS

VISIT THE FALLS

Victoria Falls, located on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the largest waterfalls in the world, measuring approximately 1,7km wide and cascading down 108m. Known as "Mosi-oa-Tunya," meaning "The Smoke That Thunders," the falls can flow at a staggering rate of up to 1,088 cubic metres per second during the rainy season. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Victoria Falls is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, attracting visitors with its breathtaking beauty and dramatic misty rainbows.

VICTORIA FALLS TRAVEL TIPS

When travelling to Victoria Falls, being well-prepared can enhance your experience and ensure a smooth journey. Here are some essential tips:

VISAS

Most visitors, including those from the UK, US, and EU, require a visa to enter Zimbabwe or Zambia, depending on which side of the falls you visit. A KAZA UniVisa is available, allowing access to both countries with one visa. Be sure to check the latest visa requirements for your nationality before travelling.

HEALTH

Victoria Falls is a malaria-risk area, especially during the rainy season, so it’s advisable to take anti-malarial medication and use insect repellent. Vaccinations for yellow fever are required if you’re arriving from a high-risk country. It's also wise to consult a healthcare professional for other recommended vaccinations and carry a basic first aid kit.

CURRENCY

Zimbabwe uses a mix of currencies, with the US Dollar (USD) widely accepted, while Zambia’s currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). ATMs are available in urban areas, but it’s best to carry cash, especially when visiting rural areas or national parks, as card facilities may be limited.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The dry season, from June to September, offers the best views of Victoria Falls, with lower water levels allowing for clearer vistas and easier access to both sides of the falls. The rainy season (November to April) brings a more powerful flow, creating dramatic spray but potentially limiting visibility. Each season offers a unique experience, with water levels peaking in April and May.

PACKING ESSENTIALS

Lightweight, breathable clothing for the day and a waterproof jacket for misty falls walks are recommended. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a good camera are essential for capturing the falls' grandeur. Binoculars can be useful for spotting wildlife in the surrounding areas.

SAFETY

Victoria Falls is generally safe for tourists, but it's wise to take basic precautions. Keep an eye on personal belongings, be cautious in crowded areas, and follow the guidance of local authorities and guides, particularly when near the edge of the falls or in wildlife areas.

CULTURAL RESPECT

The local communities around Victoria Falls have rich traditions and welcoming hospitality. Engaging with locals and respecting their customs can greatly enhance your experience. Be mindful and courteous when visiting villages or cultural sites.

CONSERVATION AWARENESS

Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key conservation area. Be mindful of the environment, respect wildlife, and avoid using single-use plastics. Supporting eco-friendly activities and responsible tourism practices helps protect the falls and its surrounding ecosystem for future generations.
