NAMIBIA

A delectable desert delight!

Namibia is a land of dramatic contrasts, where vast deserts meet the Atlantic Ocean, creating some of the most striking landscapes in Africa. The towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei, shifting with the wind, provide a breathtaking view, while the rocky terrains of Damaraland offer a glimpse into the ancient past. From the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park to the eerie Skeleton Coast and haunting Kaokaveld - land of the Himba, Namibia invites exploration and awe at every turn.

Beyond its natural wonders, Namibia is home to a unique blend of cultures and a fascinating history. The country’s commitment to conservation is evident in its community-led wildlife projects, which have helped protect endangered species like the black rhino and desert-adapted elephants. Whether you’re chasing adventure in its remote wilderness or simply marvelling at the star-strewn night skies, Namibia promises an unforgettable journey.

EXPLORE THE HIGHLIGHTS

SOSSUSVLEI

Sossusvlei is a stunning salt and clay pan set amidst the towering red dunes of the Namib Desert, creating one of Namibia’s most iconic landscapes. Known for its surreal beauty, the area is home to some of the tallest sand dunes in the world, including the famous Dune 45 and Big Daddy. The contrasting colours of the orange-red sand, bleached white pan, and deep blue sky make Sossusvlei a photographer’s paradise, while the ancient, desiccated trees of Deadvlei offer a hauntingly beautiful view of nature’s resilience.

NAMIBIA TRAVEL TIPS

When travelling to Namibia, being well-prepared can enhance your experience and ensure a smooth journey. Here are some essential tips:

VISAS

Namibia has changed its visa requirements for many countries including the US, Germany and Japan. Please check the latest requirements for your nationality with your nearest Namibian consulate.

HEALTH

Namibia is generally a low-risk area for malaria, but if you're travelling to the north, particularly near the Kavango and Zambezi regions, taking anti-malarial medication and using insect repellent is recommended. Vaccinations for yellow fever are only required if arriving from a high-risk country. Consult a healthcare professional for recommended vaccinations, and it’s wise to carry a basic first aid kit for minor ailments.

CURRENCY

The official currency is the Namibian Dollar (NAD), which is pegged to the South African Rand (ZAR). ATMs are available in cities and towns, but it’s a good idea to carry cash when visiting remote areas, as card facilities can be limited.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Namibia’s autumn (March to May) and dry winter season, from June to August, are ideal for wildlife viewing, especially in Etosha National Park. Winter is also the coolest season for exploring the desert landscapes of Sossusvlei and the Skeleton Coast. Spring (September to November) sees temperatures begin to soar, especially inland away from the coast and summer (December to February) is when rain is most likely, bringing a vibrancy to the landscapes and fewer tourists, but some roads in remote areas may be less accessible and the daytime temperatures are high.

PACKING ESSENTIALS

Light, breathable clothing for hot days and warmer layers for cool evenings are recommended, especially in the desert. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a good camera are essential for capturing Namibia’s stunning landscapes and wildlife. Binoculars are helpful for wildlife and birdwatching.

SAFETY

Namibia is generally a safe destination for tourists, but following basic safety precautions is important. Avoid displaying valuables, be cautious in urban areas, and follow the guidance of your tour guides, particularly in wildlife areas.

CULTURAL RESPECT

Namibia’s rich cultural diversity adds to the charm of any visit. Engaging respectfully with local communities enhances the experience. Always be mindful and open-minded when visiting rural areas or cultural sites.

CONSERVATION AWARENESS

Namibia is a global leader in conservation and eco-tourism. Be mindful of your environmental impact, respect wildlife, and reduce the use of single-use plastics. Supporting responsible tourism helps preserve Namibia’s unique ecosystems and wildlife for future generations.
